Awww, Yes! The open has arrived.
Friday Night Lights, BBQ’s, themed nights, beer, friends, families, and a whole lot of fun. That’s the essence of the open. Out of all things, only one thing matters. Are you ready and willing to rise to the challenge.
Whether it’s your first open, 5th, or you’ve been doing it since the beginning, it is something to be apart of. For me, I love it. I love the excitement, the adrenaline rush, and going hard for every workout.
I remember my first open workout, 14.1. I had no idea what I was getting into. It was a ten minute AMRAP of 30 double unders and 15 power snatches at 75lbs. I had only been doing CrossFit for a couple months. I just wanted to watch the excitement, but was encouraged to try it out. Glad I did. I completed my first ever Double under. I ended up doing all 30 double unders one at a time, one set of power snatches, and struggled for the rest of the ten minutes with doing another double under, haha.
When it was said and done, my arms were slashed up with whip marks from my jump rope. I looked rough, but I had so much fun. When week two came and I was hooked. The support from the crowd cheering everyone on, doing things I didn’t think I was physically able to do with my ankle, and the obsession drove me to do it week after week.
If you’re on the fence or not quite sure what to make of it, just submerge yourself into the culture of it. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Think of it as a type of physical assessment. After its over, you’ll have a better sense of what you need to work on for next year.
The best advice I have for you, whether it’s your first or 8th time, just have a good time with it. Enjoy the atmosphere of the community coming together. Enjoy the challenge of the workouts.
