The Intramural Open 2019

The CrossFit Open is a worldwide CrossFit competition. We do it every year. It’s fun. Last year, about 400,000 people entered the competition from all over the world.  This included athletes of all ability levels.

At CutThroat, we do the CrossFit Open a little bit differently. This is the CutThroat Intramural Open.

Last year, many Cutties PR’d their lifts and got movements like C2B or TTB for the first time during the Open. This year, we expect even more fun and PRs. There are Masters and Scaled Divisions so everyone can participate. This year, HQ has made some more filtering options for comparisons and we’re adding the LEVEL METHOD OPEN. It will be AWESOME!!

Our goals at CTCF: to educate and inspire, and make people better every day. Competition helps with the ‘inspire’ part: the pressure to perform pushes you to train harder; the social boost of dozens of your best friends cheering for you will help you reach a higher plane. Heck, watching your teammates GO is inspiring.

Can we bring that worldwide thrill home? Can we deliver all the fun of competition without causing any anxiety attacks? We think so.

In 2019, we’ll still have our  serious competitors. They will still try to qualify for the Master’s Online Qualifier or even the Games. But through the Open, we’re going to have two intramural teams competing. And you’re going to be on one of them!

The Captains of the two teams have been chosen! Kevin is heading up his team “Thick Butts and Sweatty Nuts” and Stacy will be leading the charge with team “Snatchsquatch.” There have been some locks with the draft and Mike and Jake are already working on the walkout song!

The Captains’ job is to get you to register for the Open, and experience the benefit of annual group competition.

These captains are basically recruiting you to have fun because simple participation matters more than actual scores. We want you to sign up this year! Are you really going to say no to one of them? I don’t think so.

Registration for the Open can be done at, and choose CutThroat CrossFit as your Affiliate and Team.

Coaches and serious competitor members will be ‘drafted’ onto an Intramural team. They won’t lose their spot on our Regional team, and their points will still count toward our Affiliate score worldwide, but we want to ensure even distribution of our most competitive athletes for the Intramural Open.  The ‘Draft Party’ will happen very soon and their names will be drawn randomly from a hat.

The next part is where you come in. You’ll be courted by one of our Team Captains to join their team – probably both of them. Pick the most fun team! All experience levels are encouraged to participate. The intramural open is more about fun than anything else.  We will hang posters in the gym where you can write your name onto the team of choice. You will have until the week of the first Open Workout (2/22/2019) to make your final decision. If you were drafted, you will have to be formally traded if you wish to change teams. You’ll know who was formally drafted when we put up the poster.

+1 Point – Attendance: every member of a team that completes an Open workout at CTCF each week earns one point. Maximum one point per athlete per workout. The Open WOD will be the Workout of the Day each Friday. This goes for Rx AND Scaled competitors!

+1 Point – If the workout is completed during the “Friday Night Lights” series. More on this below.

+1 Point – Uploading your score to the games site each week (must formally register for these points).

+1 Point – Top 3: male AND female member who places among the Top 3 at CTCF for each workout (We will have points for Rx and scaled this year and points for specific Levels based on the week) gets an extra point for their team. *Must also formally submit score to get points.

+1 Point – For becoming a registered judge (one time only point)

+1 Point – Completing a Bingo – All 5 squares in a row (must submit by 2/28)

+5 Points – Bingo Blackout (must submit by 2/28)

+5 Points (team) – Spirit: The team with the most noise, pride, and PRESENCE each week will receive 5 bonus points.

+5 Points (bonus) – 6th workout: see below.

In 2018, athletes competing in the Open will have only four days to complete each workout. We will be doing the Open Workouts on Fridays. The Open will have five workouts (five weeks); we have a BONUS WOD planned, time tbd. You are welcome to make up the workout on Saturday during class if you miss Friday.  You’ll also need to coordinate with a registered judge. Please no repeats unless you are within 100 spots of making regionals/masters.

You do not need to be a member of CutThroat to join an intramural team. However; non members must perform their workouts at CutThroat to post points for their team and register for drop in here.  CrossFit Kids and Kids in our Athletic Performance group can be recruited and join an intramural open team to help with points. Kids under 14 cannot participate in the official CrossFit Games Open on though.

More participants can be recruited for the 6th Workout. They can be anyone (kids included) and they are not required to have completed even one Open Workout. This 6th ‘WOD’ will be judged per team and individual ‘points’ will not matter.

The winning team will be added to our Intramural Open Plaque to be presented at the Spring CutThroat Community Bar B Que tbd.

Our focus is on FUN. We want participation because it will make you fitter, and it will get you high-fives and you’ll be happy and love life more and glow and stuff.

Starting on Friday 2/22, we will be having a “Friday Night Lights” series to complete the Open WODs. The regular 5:00pm ‘class’ will be Friday Night Lights during these five weeks and we will have FNL heat sign ups starting at 5:00pm. More details on this later but we can challenge other intramural team members for individual events, wagers will be encouraged, etc.

To get the point for your team, you’ll need to print your judge’s certificate and we’ll hang it up in the gym.

Register online at the CrossFit Games site, and let’s start this party!

Stay tuned for the posters and let’s see how these Captains will recruit you!
